Gear lube is for cars, your boat motor isn't a car.

Use LOWER UNIT OIL only, it has additives to deal with water intrusion.

No need to get fancy, the stuff from Wal Mart works great and you should change it regularly, I do mine 2-3 times a season to keep an eye on the lower.

A quart of oil is $4, a lower is $800, do the math.

Jared, On a motor that new, I would recommend synthetic marine gear oil. It is a bit better (IMHO) than the Dino stuff. If the motor is older, it is a don't care.

$4 a quart seams cheap are you buying used oil 800 for a lower must also be a used price do you work at a junk yard. giving advise i would also buy the pump ussualy comes with or seperatly that wy you can fill from the bottom up

Re: Lower Unit Lube

To be clear, you said " 80-90w gear lube" which is entirely different than lower unit oil, you may have meant lower oil but you didn't say it and my telepathy is on the fritz this week.

And the price was an example to illustrate a point, the correct oil is much cheaper than a new lower, yes I know they cost more than that although I have purchased a used lower with a new prop for $145.00, been running it for 4 years now.

And no, I do not work at junk yard, I build extremely high quality pontoon boats and am a TIG welder by trade.

I would suggest when giving advice be sure you say what you mean, the wrong advice could cost someone hundreds of dollars, like using gear oil instead of lower unit oil.
