She fired up today without a hitch after this long hard winter.
I have to admit I've not done much maintainence to this engine. I bought it in 1981 and have never even changed out the impeller, I've replaced the dual points and cap once, she still has the original wires, can't ask for a better engine.
Now this brings up the question of why is it that I'm told the impeller should be changed each year or at least every other year same with the points, I guess it actually depends on how the boat is operated slip vs trailered salt vs freshwater ect.

Oh and also the regular impeller changes refer to I/O drives, but are the ouboard impellers any different in this aspect, I know mine is at least 28 yrs old and going strong.

When I do change it I'll take a picture of while it's still in the pump as well as after it's out side by side comparison to a new one, I changed the impeller in my I/O last year and the original one was still plyable and looked good but it wasn't 30 yrs old either.

Yeah. Sometimes an impeller will last and last and sometimes one will fail after only a year or so.

Waiting for it to fail, however, would be extremely dumb. That is sort of like waiting for a fatal heart attack before you do anything about your cholesterol.
