48 johnson, need help finding year

i have a 48 johnson and i am not sure how to find out the year. the guy i bought it from said the boat was a 1987... not sure if the motor is original or not. the motor needs a new rectifier due to a ex friend putting the battery terms the wrong way. and i am not sure what the part # will be. help finding the year or a rectifier that will work would be great. did johnson make a 48 in 1987.

what is the model #? they made 48's for a lot of years. either on the transom mount, or a silver freeze plug on the block.

did some checking they all use the same rectifier, BRP # 581778 or sierra 185709 here http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...d_poid=109228&gd_row=106&**********=582902792

thanks you so much. i was hoping it would be that easy. i guess the year does not matter so much for now but im curious where can i find the model #? the motor just says johnson 48.
