Sorry if I spelled it wrong. Ok Im redoing my Skiff Craft windshields upper and lower. I almost got it completely sanded and am getting ready to stain it.
At what temp would be ok to start it?
Thanks Beef

Re: Staining Mahogany

You can stain it at just about any temperature, you will need to let it dry. That may take a day or 2 if it is really cold.
Now the clear coat is different.

Thanks wood crafter.
What I was thinking of doing is thin the pettit red mahogany stain with mineral sprits 50/50 or to the consistencie of paint and put it on with a foam brush, let it soak for about 5 min and rub it off across the grain.what do you think?

I am not familiar with the Pettit stain you are using. Is it a gel stain?
Is it so thick that you need to thin it down to paint consistancy?

I wouldn't thin it since you said it's a stain/filler. The filler portion of the product is to fill the wood's grain so you have a nice flat surface for the finish top coats. It's been years since I've used a grain filler, but follow their directions and don't thin it unless it says to. From what I remember you need to brush it on, let it sit for (an hour ???,,, dunno) and then rub off the excess stain/filler with a soft cloth. This will leave you with a completely flat surface,,, instead of the bajillion pore holes of the wood.

Re: Staining Mahogany

Fishrdan is right, don't thin it.

Grain fillers can be used several ways.
The last time I used grain filler I squeegyed it on with the grain and squeegyed it off across the grian.
