I have an 89' Johnson 110 and when the motor is trimed at an angle (as the pics show) there is oil coming out of where the arrow is. When the motor is in an upright position is does not leak. I am not sure if the oil is pooling the the metal part on the bottom of the motor then when its at an angle its leaking out of what. Can you help. Is the lower unit cracked?

Drain some of the LU lube and see if it is milky looking or lost a lot of fluid. You may just be seeing unburned mix.

It is not milky at all, its pretty dirty and smells like gear oil. I have had oil coming out of the water exit ports on the lower unit in the past but read a forum on here and it said that was normal. When the motor was at an angle is had a pretty good drip coming out. I just don't want to run the lower unit dry.

When you tipped the motor, you just let gravity work on all the sludge. Just make sure you check the LU oil a couple of times each season and drain and replace at the end of each season...not the beginning. If water does get in, I'll start corroding your LU during the winter, so store it with fresh lube!

If it's pretty dirty...change it now!

There shouldn't be any drain holes where the arrow is. The oil must be coming from higher up and running down to there. You say you can't see where? Could be the drive shaft seal if it is coming from the water inlet screens.

Do I see a weld on the skeg? Maybe the gearcase is cracked.

The arrow is where the oil is dripping off of but not where its coming from. Gravity is making it drip from there. I believe the skeg...? is holding the oil and allowing it to pool and when I tilt the motor its leaking out. My question is where is this oil coming from? Is it unburnt oil/fuel?

OK, sorry, I looked in haste. A second look says you have a skeggard on there, which is hollow, so it very well could be pooling oil. However, that doesn't prove where it is coming from. Most likely it is coming from the exhaust area (around the prop shaft). That still could be unburned fuel from the exhaust, or it could be gear oil.

What you need to do is keep an eye on the gear oil, which you indicate is not milky, but dirty. I suggest an oil change is in order just because it is dirty. That is a preventative maintenance anyway.

But until proven otherwise, I'd assume it is drainage from the exhaust (normal). You'd probably never notice it if it weren't collecting in the skeggard. If you are really worried, you could have a pressure test performed. If it were me, I would just go ahead and run it and keep an eye on it for awhile.

Just unburnt oil, this is normal for 2 strokes. I have a 2000 25 hp Johnson and it does the same thing. Just make sure you check the LU gear oil as it could be coming from there.

Well I took the motor into the shop and the lower unit was almost full of water and the seals were shot.
