So I have had a 1967 Evinrude 3hp Lightwin sitting in my garage for about 9 years now. Someone gave me the motor and a 12' alum. Just last year I finally bought a trailer for the boat, and I took the top off of the motor. I have no mechanical ability (yet). I gotta get that motor working.

I found this link from someone via this site.

I would like to know of some good books about either this type of outboard, or older outboards in general. I think that that particular site breaks down all of the stuff I would need to replace. The one good thing going for me is the fact that whoever took care of the motor before me drained the tank, but I guess the carb will have to be totally cleaned out.

Any other info out there for a newbie like me?

Are the Seloc manuals worthy?

The problem with seloc and the like is that they try to cover too many models in one manual, and thereby do not do any well. The OEM will cover only a couple models at most.

I have the 1968 3hp lightwin, it sat in the shed for 15 years, and we took it out - and put some gas to it - and ran it on the old spark plugs for that whole summer. I would recommend checking the fluids, specifically lower unit, but hey - maybe it already fires - give it a shot.

the only carb work my motor has had in 40 years is me running a can of engine tuner through it this spring.

I just got one of these going. Pretty easy but need to do a couple of things.

Clean out all old gas.

Remove the carb and take it apart. Use choke cleaner to get all gunk out then blow out all passages with compressed air. Get a carb kit with float from Nicks Marine and install it.

Put in new J6C spark plugs.

Check for spark. If OK put some gas in

Gas mixture is 24 to 1.

Put in new gas and see if it will go.

It will probably be necessary to change the magneto coils. Wholesale Marine has the Sierra replacements. Mine were cracked and would quit when the engine warmed up.

Change the water pump impeller. It should spit out water through the slots half way up the housing.

These are nice running motors and will slow idle well.

Good Luck

I think the gas mix is 40 or 50 to 1, it is listed at 40 to 1 in my manual for my 68 model 3hp and 50 to 1 for that year on the evinrude site faq pages. Although, I would run a 25 to tank through any motor that has not run for that long.

Somewhere between 24-1 and 40-1 will work. Less oil for idling helps plug fouling. More oil for continuous high speed is needed...

I think there is a significant model shift between 67 and 68 3hp. I think that the 68 may have needle and ball bearings that will work with 50-1 mix

Re: 1967 Evinrude 3hp "project"

I think shortly after the 68 they made the rings with bearing in them, and the rpm was increased on the same basic motor to make it a 4hp, but I don't think the oil to gas mix changed with that.
