Re: 1982 evinrude 140 question

Your symptoms describe a starter problem except for what caused the motor to stop. The neutral switch could be the problem, but usually moving the throttle arm a little will release the switch as long as the control is in neutral.

Let's look at the starter wiring: the fuse seems OK, so you can try the solenoid by wiring a lightweight jumper from the main large incoming battery post (6) on the solenoid to the positive (red and yellow wire) small post (3) on the solenoid. That will jump the solenoid to see if the wiring is OK at the engine.

If the starter works, the problem would be in the harness wiring or the ignition switch.

More likely that you are not getting enough RPM to fire the ignition system; you need 300 RPM and that will take a fully charged, powerful battery, good battery cables, and spotless connections.

When the motor is cold, be sure to use both the warm up lever and the primer solenoid.

Re: 1982 evinrude 140 question

Better not take chances on old gas. Sta-bil should be added when the gas is new. If you don't have a water-separating fuel filter, you should add one to your system.

If that old gas/oil mix is gelled, it will clog your carburetors to the point that only a rebuild will help.

Re: 1982 evinrude 140 question

Try pushing the key in and holding it in while you crank. If your primer solenoid is functional, it should get enough fuel to the firing chambers. You may need to pump the primer bulb more than once.

Re: 1982 evinrude 140 question

A new to you engine? not run for a couple of seasons?

Heres what I did.
go through everything.

Replumb the lines, clean tank.
change all filters.
rebuild ,not merely clean, the carbs.
Remove and clean all elec connections from the battery to the sparkplug and anything in between.
Drain, inspect and change lower unit oil, use new seals on drain screws.
Remove prop and inspect for fishing line on shaft (or expect to blow the seal).

All new fuel, add startron or whatever additive you want and try again on a water hose.

If it starts watch for the water pee stream, if its wimpy do the water pump, or do it anyway.

I did all that before trying to run it, with one dirty carb its very easy to blow the engine. No fuel...no lube.
