Hi all-

I am looking for a great fishing trip for my son and I to the Bahamas and thought I would ask the knowledgeable folks here for some thoughts. I am looking for a combination of fly and deep sea. Good, high end boat and good high end accomodations.

Would appreciate your thoughtful comments and recommendations.

The best thing to do is use a Guide and be sure that all the permits are in order, the fishing regulations in the Bahamas are very stringent, strictly catch and release for Non-Bahamians and make darn sure that there are no more than a total of six rods and six reels on your boat.

Do not know where in the Bahamas that you are going, but I have fished in the Grand Bahamas for the last 20 years, the fishing is basicly poor. I fish the month of March in the Grand Bahamas. I have done both bone fishing and deep sea fishing. It is not worth the 400-500 bucks for a half day. The last four years I have been bottom fishing for grunts, triggers, yelowtail etc:, they are not big fish, but when you are catching 15-20 fish or more in the four hours, that is good fishing. Oh, the cost 50 bucks for four hours per person.

In the Grand Bahamas, if you plan on keeping fish, you had best tell the owner prior to going on your trip. They keep all the fish. After my first year fishing their I learned to tell them that I keep all fish. they figure that most people that go their are tourist staying in a motel, I live there for a month and have facilities to cook the catch and if not I give it to the care takers of the property.

I would look into Abaco, Bahamas. Been there twice and caught Snapper, Triggerfish, grunts and yellowtails using ballyhoo and frozen squid on a basic bottom rig. You can bring your fly rod and go after bonefish in the flats. Offshore fishing there is very popular becuase of the great barrier reef just out past the string of cays here.
