My outdrive is a 85 MR 99% the same as a alpha 1 gen 1 if you're more familiar with those.

anyway theres 5 zerks on it according to the manual and I greased all 5 using the correct mercury 2-4-c grease and their gimbel/u joing grease.

well I saw grease pumping out at all places when I greased it today except the gimbal/u joing greasing area..I put around 20 pumps to it looking while I was doing it see if I could see grease coming out anywhere...never saw it?

so where would I see it come out or is it sealed or something..it never got like TIGHT TIGHT so I know it was coming out somewhere.

thanks!

Ayuh,..

Generally, the purged grease from the gimbel bearing goes into the Bellows...
Or,..
It'll possibly run down the inside of the transom...

I recommend greasing the gimbal bearing when the drive is off. Then you can clean up the mess, before it gets slung all over the bellows and ujoints because of overgreasing.

During winterization, grease the bearing, turn it a half or quarter turn and do it again, make sure all the old grease is out. Then, wipe up all the old grease to keep things clean.
IF you idle (troll) a LOT, every 50 hours is recommended. Just run it on muffs and pump a few strokes every 50 hours. 20 pumps without turning the bearing doesn't do anything but waste grease

Don,

so the way I did it was just mainly pump grease into the bellows and didn't grease the bearing good or at all?

so sounds like run the boat then next time I have it out pump a couple of more pumps of grease?

you also mentioned turning it...do you mean pump a little grease in then manually turn the foor left to right then pump a few more?

ya got new grease in it. but only one side of the brg. so yes, you could grease it better.
you'll see when ya take yer drive off what he's saying.
as ya grease the zerk, it just travels into one side of the brg. then starts coming out of the brg. when the drives off, you can spin the brg. with yer fingers and see the old grease being ejected and being replaced by new all the way around since yer spinning the brg. when stationary. the grease just drips off the brg. in that one spot that your greasing, since your not rotating it...
seems like the grease it on the muffs at idle with a few shots would do it pretty good.

No- the shaft turns when the engine is on regardless of the lower unit's gear selection. Trying to grease that with the prop turning sounds like a good way to hurt yourself.

Also 10 pumps with a grease gun is WAY overkill. 2-3 pumps is all you need unless you want to make a total mess when its time to pull the drive off, although it sounds like you may already have a bellow full of grease :)

When the engine is turning, it direct drives the shaft and u joints out to the drive. Thats why you should'nt operate the engine when the drive is past upper trim. I lube the gimbal before I go out, then when I get it home after the trip I lube it again. Not much each time, 2-3 pumps. I do this every 25-30 hrs. Last time I pulled my drive there was fresh grease on the gimbal and actually very little globbed out. LOL I was sure I was over lubing it but looks like its just enough.
