Odd markings on Volvo motor

In the picture below, it looks like there was something previously attached to the front of this motor. Motor is a Volvo AQ130D. Was there possibly a heat exchanger previously attached or was this perhaps a car motor? It's apparent by the paint outline above the raw water pump that there was something there at one time. Any ideas?

Looks like some hack found a way to bypass the engines circulation pump. Go up to the Volvo parts link, then gas engines, then AQ engines and follow the links.

Just looked at all the pictures I could find and it looks like all the hardware is in the right places. But that's got me thinking. Since it's an open cooling system I don't have any protection if I decide to use the boat in salt water. Not necessarily a bad thing, just limits where I can take the boat.

my guess is that the block was in a car and is now in your boat.
somebody replaced a damaged engine or frozen block with one from a car, or another marine app that employed a circ pump

of course, "guess what was there" is all anyone can do

Well - I guess it just is what it is. Did notice a few things on the bottom photo you provided. That motor doesn't have the strainer mounted on the motor and it used front motor mounts. Since my strainer leaks like crazy, guess I could mount another one anywhere I wanted. The other thng is the front motor mounts. Mine just has a single pivot point bumper on the outdrive mount. The motor balances on the transom. Seems odd but it must work.

EDIT - wait, what am I thinking? The tag on the block says it's an AQ130D so it can't be an auto engine.

Man I love those old volvo engines, never had one in a boat but many in the car (4 of them). Bulletproof.

How do they hold up in a boat?
