Just wondering if anybody knows an GM automotive starter that will work in the Mercrusier 140? I keep hearing that old GM starters for four cyclinders are interchangable. Anybody know what car has the same starter as a Mercruiser 140?

Use the correct marine version and you`ll be much safer, Inline Chevy 4`s and 6`s are interchangable but if you ever see a car on the river or lake with this same engine you could ask them what there using.

Sidewinder,
First of all Welcome Aboard...

Some great minds on this site. They have help me immensley..
In fact my first newbie question was a LOT like yours..

You do NOT EVER NEVER EVER use Automotive starters/alternernators/carbs on your marine engine. Period. Are we clear on that??? Say yes and you and your loved ones will live long and happy boating lives.

Go to the top toolbar and do a "SEARCH FORUM"..type in automotive parts, or any such nomenclature and you will be awashed with info on this issue..

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,....
Boat's Electrical systems Have to be Spark Protected,....
And,.. Fuel systems have to be Leak Proofed....

Not using Marine rated parts leads to Explosions,+ Dead bodies.....

Some parts of some motors may interchange with their automotive cousins,...
But Not the Electrical, or Fuel systems....

I went with the marine starter. Thanks for the incite! The guy before me had an automotive starter, but yeah, better safe than sorry.

I watched a 42 ft house boat burn to the water line and sink due (1) not running the blowers afetr fueling up and (2) having just replaced a starter with the "cheaper" automotive version. Fortunately/ Luckily no one was hurt.

I know this ? comes up allot mostly by not knowing any better but it would be cool to have a basic do's and don't's banner and or stickie rolling at all times on the section of the forum or some sort of pop up. Man I would hate to see any of our new members unknowingly kill and or harm themselves.
