Re: horsepower

That should work. Doesn't take a lot to just fish.

Re: horsepower

A 17 foot crestliner tri-hull would be fiberglass rather than aluminum so it would be heavy. Even so, 50 to 60 should get it up on plane with a light load, but just barely. You probably will need to find a low pitch prop for it though. For fishing it should be OK as long as you are not carrying a couple of 300 pound buddies with you.

Re: horsepower

I agree with TD. That boat is likely rated for 100-125HP, Max.
It usually takes 70% of rated HP to get satisfactory performance.

The 50 or 60 might plane the boat in ideal conditions, but if things get tough. . .harsh conditions or heavy loads. . .that would not be enough.

Re: horsepower

50-60 hp would be fine if propped correctly. Don't lug the motor...

Re: horsepower

Minimum 70hp is my 2 cents.
Nothing worse than finding you are underpowered or not satisfied with the performance when you have just invested in the motor.

Re: horsepower

I have a 17 foot Alumacraft walleye boat and it is not especially heavy. It has a 75 Merc for power and performs very well. On your boat I wouldn't think of anything less than that. Check the maximum HP plate on the boat. Multiply that number by .75. That's the minimum you should have to create a reasonable performing boat. Anything less will kill performance with a heavier load.

Re: horsepower

Not much info to go on Bubba. You could get by with just an electric trolling motor in the right conditions. All depends on where and how you fish.

Will the boat be used for anything other than just fishing? By yourself or with a few buds?

No sense spending money on a larger than needed motor. More HP = more $$$
