I'm going to be taking apart this tower of power in the next week or so.

When you lose a rod, does the crank usually suffer damage? How can I tell if i need to replace the crank?

What diagnostic/investigation steps should I perform to ascertain the extent of the damage?

Why the #5? Is there a common cause for the #5 to fail that I should look for?

There is a hole in the cover, but I have the pieces and have a welder lined up to repair this.

Before I can work on the motor, I need to clean the garage and organize my tools. So, that's why it will be a few weeks.

Thanks everyone! I really like this motor and had been planning on a rebuild at some point, and now it looks like that point has arrived.

Well it's hard to say before it's torn down, you need to carefully inspect the crank for damage, it the sleeve is damaged it can be bored or re-sleeved if necessary. If the crank is bad there are used ones out there and rebuilts if you want to go that way. Tear it down and get back.

Yeah, true. I started cleaning the garage yesterday so pretty soon I'll get it apart. I'll take lots of pictures as well.

I am pretty sure I purchased a lifting ring/flywheel puller from Clams, but I'll have to dig it up to be sure. I can't think of anything else I need to start, right?

For disassembly all you should need is hand tools, lift eye and flywheel puller.
