Discolored gelcoat repair.

I repaired a few spots on my ranger boat, with the factory gelcoat (perfect white) and the sanded spots have a yellow tint to them. It's not the color because the spots that I filled are white just a little darker white than the rest of the boat (must be due to oxidation), but the surrounding area that I sanded seems discolored. Could it be some thing with the rubbing compound? I'm using Malco Rejuvenatory after sanding with 220, 400, 600, 1000, and then 2000. The repairs look good except a discolored square that I had taped off. Any ideas to what could be causing this?

Re: Discolored gelcoat repair.

How long ago did you do this repair? If its less than a season, let it spend some time in the sun and outdoors and the colors should match better. Pictures would help, too.

Re: Discolored gelcoat repair.

Many things can affect the color of a repair, or an area that's been sanded.

Not knowing how old the boat is, I would say that possibly the darker color is the original color and that you sanded off the faded lighter surface and now the sanded area looks darker.

Buffing compound can also discolor the sanded area, so what color is the product you used?

Using a tape line can create issues also, its best to not use tape, or at least not close to the repair. This allows the repair to be blended in over a larger and less defined area, helping to hide it from your eye.

2003 ranger fisherman. It has been used pretty much every day of the summer. I just did the repairs, so they haven't seen any sun. The buffing compound is pink.

Here is the compound I'm using: Malco Rejuvenator. If you click on the MSDS link it gives the ingredients. I also tried to take some pics, but they just don't show the yellowing very well.
