If you do can you tell me how the top mounted starter recoil engages the flywheel to turn it. All I can see is that there is a shaft mounted on the flywheel that goes into a needle bearing lined hole in the recoil assembly.
I can't figure out how it engages then disengages when the motor starts up.
Mine was working then quit and I didn't notice any parts flying off.
Thanks

**update**
I contacted a guy on ebay and he said the needle bearings are suppose to be teeth like grippers that engage the shaft on the flywheel. If their worn out then they won't grip and I guess mine are worn out or something is worn out.
I bought is his recoil and we will see if he was correct when it gets here.

Can't say I've seen one adapted to a recoil starter, but you are describing a one-way clutch. They are also used in automatic transmissions for cars.

If we can get a model number from this guy, we'll be able to figure this out. If we can't, we won't. We don't even know what horspower it is, so we don't know if it's one of those little Tanaka things or one of the Chryslers.

Re: Early 90's Gamefisher recoil

The year is in the title as well as the make. Force/Gamefisher used basically the same recoil starter from the mid 80's until end of production (atleast it looks that way on Mercruiser.com).
My outboard is a 1993 Force 9.9 which is exactly the same as a Gamefisher.
I posted this in the Force section but didn't get any hits so I thought I would try here.

Anyways, like I previously mentioned I contacted a guy on ebay and hopefully got the right info from him. I bought his recoil assembly for $25 so hopefully it will work. The starter rewind that I need is $70 alone new. EXPENSIVE

Thanks for trying CAtransplant but for now I think I have it figured out.

I hope that works out for you. The confusion was caused because both Force and Tanaka made outboards that were sold under the Gamefisher brand by Sears.

Calling your Force a Gamefisher muddled the question.
