Man..that hits home..I used to fish out of Long Beach Marina a lot..I lived across the bridge in San Pedro..Maybe a 15 min drive...

Old salty deckies (mates as you say here on the E coast) would usually do stupid stuff, bite the head of a sardine..eat a tuna heart beating (I am guilty of this) and other such nonsense..

I guess this wipes out the "Worst day fishing is better than the best day working" bumper sticker..sad

Further evidence that you can't fix stupid.

That's gotta be a bad way to go.

I was offshore fishing a few years ago and passed one of the green deckhands in the galley, he was wet from the waist up  I casually say "how's it going" he replies in Spicoli' surfer lingo,,, well dude, the net fell in the bait tank, and while I was fishing it out,,, I slipped and went in...

I guess a couple of guys pulled him out by his feet

Actually, you can sometimes fix stupid. In this case, all it would have taken is a reasonably sharp knife and the barrel of a pen. Not the cleanest way in the world to do an emergency tracheotomy, but it works.

Thought of that too Jay_Merrill...Was wondering if the flesh of the bait (sardine I assume) would allow a trach procedure??

Also thought about a really small barbless hook or a hook taped to a straw inserted as gently as possible and try to snag the bait...may sound crazy as HE!! but beats being dead.

I wondered the same thing about why noone tried an emergency trach. We had to be able to describe in detail how one would do that in high school biology class. Time is critical, you have to do what you can.

I guess it would depend on how far down the fish made it. Even if it had descended quite a bit, you might be able to angle whatever type of tube that you use, to push it past the fish. The reality of it is that, at that point, you really don't have anything to lose, because you will suffocate for sure, if you don't do something.

Was that a funny that JB makes? I don't believe I have seen one yet. :D

This story reminded me of another one. There was a story out of Korea a couple of years back. They eat live little octopus over there, it's a delicacy. They pick it out of the water and swallow it whole. This unlucky guy, who probably have done it many times, ate one for the last time. Apparently, the suckers on this particular octopus latched on to his airway. The thing didn't go down as planned and choked the guy to death.

This is kind of freaky. When you first ready the thing, you think the guy is just stupid for eating a bait fish.....then you think what is wrong with that. That is just bad luck. I'm sorry for his relatives.
