PT plywood and aluminum

12yr. old floor of my boat had waterlogged pt plywood which stank but was relatively sturdy. When I pulled up the floor there was no shims keeping it off the aluminum stringers. I have heard chemicals in pt cause bad things to happen to aluminum. Other than a whitish color to the aluminum everything seems sound.

Would just sanding the stringers be sufficient or should I be looking at some application to reverse any chemical reaction?

The key there is your boat is 12 years old. Your old floors were probably CCA pressure treated which was poison to humans is ingested (contained arsenic)..... the "new" pressure treated wood is ACQ which contains copper.

The new pressure treated wood can have an effect on various metals.

The whitish coating on the aluminum is typical aluminum corrosion. Clean it off with soapy water and a brush.

What are your plans? Are you going to replace the wood deck? Regular exterior plywood coated with resin and fiberglass is probably the quickest and safe bet. I am surprised the old floor was PT.

I was planning on replacing it, even have 3 sheets of acx but other than being wet the old wood is of better quality as far as ply's. Would take alot of sanding to get it anywhere near smooth not to mention dry time. Cutting new sheets will take some doing though as well. I suppose if I dried the old stuff and coated it it wouldn't stink as bad.

Really supprised how well the old wood held up. Only took 30 min with a belt sander to remove the funk, the staples from the old vinyl were the biggest pain. Intend on returning the 3 sheets in exchange for some poly.

Is the Home Depot poly any good?

I would not buy my resin at Home Depot, go to a plastics supplier. If you go to a building supply yard you should still be able to buy CCA treated ply. I hate that ACQ crap because it is so hard on fasteners.

Have a great day,

Rob
