Anchor Line Holder? What's it called?

Looking for a piece of hardware to mount on the front deck or bow rail to wrap/store anchor line on. Kind of like the things that extension cords are wrapped up on for neat storage. I just don't know what they are called, and even if they exist.

Know what they are called?

Thanks!!!!

Something like this??

http://www.iboats.com/Anchormate_II/dm/*******.558998232--**********.076763328--view_id.40618

I typed "anchor reel" in the Iboats store and got several hits.

Not looking for a reel, but thanks for taking the time to look! I have in mind something like this plastic extension cord holder. Its even simpler than the Anchormate. But in stainless and meant to let the line slip off all at once for ease of handling. Like this extension cord holder would be like if two of the end "fingers" were removed on the same side.

Mark is this what your looking for?

Line Winder

TC

Thats getting closer! LOL!

I think its something I'll end up making myself. I just want to be able to wrap the line around a couple of 6 or 8" sections of 3/4" stainless tube about 1.5 feet apart. Then once around the two tubes will wrap up 3 feet of line. When done wrapping the line up, it could be slid off easily for handling and re-deployment of the anchor. Would be nice if mounted on the bow rail itself.

Two cleats could be mounted 1.5 ft apart, but it wouldn't be easy to get the line off without having to unwrap the entire length of line. I want to be able to slide it off.

I know what you're saying and I've not seen anything close to what you want in SS. I'm thinking you might want to go to a local metal shop, if you can't do it yourself, and have them make one. Or, you could just bolt one together. I was thinking, have it "point" up, and a couple hinges on the railings (think like flag pole mounts) and you can drop it to have the line fall off.

I've never seen anything like what you're describing Mark. If I understand you correctly, I think using something like that would be hazardous to your fingers, especialy while letting out the anchor rode in windy conditions.

I think what I will end up doing is using common rail fittings to make a line holder:

Mount two of these about 18" apart on the deck:

Then put two 6" lengths of tube in them, with two 90* bends on top and a horizontal length between them. Kind of like a towel rack mounted on the deck.

The the line can be wrapped around it (end to end), and pulled up and off easily when needed to deploy the anchor. Probably mount it under the bow rail so its out of the way when standing on the deck.

That along with a windline anchor mount on the bow rail should give me nice organized anchor and line storage right where I need it - up on the bow.

I understand what you want. I want the same thing.....but my boat is smaller your yours. I don't want to have to shove the anchor and line into a storage bin and have a bunch of tangles. Ideally I'd have something on my bow rails that was nice and tidy to hold the lines and anchor without looking silly.

Bekosh, even though its not what I need, it sure is a nice cord storage. Could use one in the garage and basement for the extension cord. For some reason, I seem to be the only one in my house who has the gene that lets you wind up an extension cord neatly after use. ;)

I found a retailer that sells bow rail by the foot. Thats nice for small projects like this.

The reason I started this thread is because with the hard top almost done and the latest window design working, I can easily climb out the hard top window to the bow (instead of squeezing out that little hatch) to do anchor duty. But I don't want to have to drag an anchor and line with me. So I've been spending lots of time thinking about how to organize the anchor and line on the bow.

It comes down to two basic designs: 1) an anchor mount and line holder or 2) an anchor pulpit and line holder.

The Windline anchor mount looks like it would work well. People say its a good design and heavy duty piece of hardware. I like that.

An Anchor pulpit is also a nice way to store the anchor, but I don't know if it will work well for deploying the anchor for my boating. I typically anchor in shallow water near a beach. An anchor pulpit means that the anchor is dropped, then the boat is backed toward the shore, (then a second anchor is deployed off the stern and usually dug in on the beach but this is done regardless of how I deploy the bow anchor)

One nice thing about an anchor pulpit is that the line can be wrapped around the anchor back to a mooring bit in a big loop to store the line.

I'm just rambling, throwing out the thoughts I've been having.

Any one have a similar situation that cares to share how they handle keeping it all sorted out nice? I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks!

Mark.

Re: Anchor Line Holder? What's it called? A BUCKET??

Re: Anchor Line Holder? What's it called? A BUCKET??

I have found that the best thing to hold my anchor line in and tangle free is a five gallon bucket.
The anchor can be placed on top of the line in the bucket for storage and when needed can be carried to where the anchor is to be deployed.
As the line comes out of the bucket it will not tangle as when the line has been wrapped around two posts.
When retrieving the anchor just start placing the line in the bucket, it does not have to be placed in any special way. It will deploy in the reverse as to the way it was placed in the bucket.

Now that is interesting. Hmmmm..... would this work with an anchor locker? My boat doesn't have one, but I could build one in. I certainly don't have the space for a 5 gallon bucket, but some space could be taken from the cabin for it. Generally only 50 ft of line is needed, but extra is carried in case it needs extending for deeper water.

Normally, the line will come out just as easy as it went in. The problems come from it being moved once it's in place. If it doesn't move, it'll come out tangle free.

Anchor locker on mine but it can be a pain to shove the rope into the hole. Took the anchor rode out the other day. All the way out. To check the line and redo the shackles, and thimble, and to turn the line end for end. Let me tell you, it takes a bit to shove a couple hundred feet of line into a little hole between your feet. It was made a bit more difficult because the line is starting to stiffen up a bit. So, even though I made the end for end turn, it's about time to get another anchor rode.

Those are the ones I used now. I will probably end up getting these if I find them discounted some day..
