I was wondering if anyone is familiar with how these older boats were setup as far as fuel tanks, This is an 18 foot 63 Starchief daycabin boat. I believe when I got it it was changed. It is an outboard boat.

Thanks For any help

I guess we'd need a little more info. What exactly do you think was changed?

Re: 63 Starcraft Starchief Fuel

Sorry, When I purchased it it had 2 black Tempco 12 gal tanks under the transom area that were obviously after market as they did not fit very well, Im assuming it had some sort of tak back there as it had 2 filler caps that look original to the boat? Right now I have 2 6gal tanks back there but its just not enough capacity but Im affraid if I place too big of a tank it gonna have me riding with my bow sticking straight up even when trimmed all the way out.

Just kind of curious to see it in its original form, I seen an add for it but couldnt read the fine print.

I love those old ads, NB. I've never seen the second Starcraft in that ad. What model is that? The prop sure is in a weird place!

Oregon, how about some pics of your boat?

I would think the tanks were where they belonged. It seems your Helm is mid. boat. Any gear you have stored under the bow should compensate for the weight concerns. The 18 gallon tanks have to fit tight and should be straped down. Do not want any loose fuel leaking.

My 1963 18' Starcraft "Starchief" is fitted with four 6 gal tanks. I assumed it was retro sometime after purchase, but sadly the people who would know are no longer around to ask. But I can say it has never had a problem in with the 4 tanks.

My starchief has had a 14" transom extension with a fuel tank in teh bottom. For the inboards i have seen there's a seat on both sides of the stern that have a fuel tank under them. I like the idea of the fuel being "outside" of the boat in case of any trouble even if the extension takes away from the original appearance a little. You can see the pics on my thread.
