so I put a new water pump in my outdrive. When i put it back together i actually had the drive in reverse instead of drive. When I put it on the boat it wouldnt shift to neutral or drive. So I split the drive and put the drive in forward. The prop spins clockwise and the shaft spins counterclockwise. So I put it back together and installed it on the boat. Now the boat is in drive and wont come out of it. When Remove the drive the shiftcable moves and the shift arm. Once I put the drive on she wont move. Any Ideas Im going nuts here.

Re: Shifting Issues

sounds like you just removed the lower. is that correct?
if so, you can put it together in any condition. f,n, r.
for the sake of easy. have the helm in fwd and the lower in fwd too. fwd. on the lower is when the prop locks ccw. it will ratchet cw. reverse is opposite. whatever ya do. the helm and the lower need to be the same.
if you removed the drive. you must be in fwd to get the drive off or on. the shift shaft coupler must be facing fwd.
sometimes it's easy to loose fwd on the lower while reassembling it. to help keep the lower in fwd. i use a bungee to load the prop in the ccw direction. (learned that from bondo, and works good)

when in fwd. the prop will lock ccw and ratchet cw
when in neutral, the prop will freewheel either direction
when in revers. the prop will lock cw and ratchet ccw.

so far it sounds like your not having the helm and the drive in the same condition. fwd. would be the thicket. might as well get in the habit of fwd. when removing the drive as it's essential for removing the whole drive.

When Remove the drive the shiftcable moves and the shift arm. Once I put the drive on she wont move. Any Ideas Im going nuts here.
with the drive off. try and shift the drive on the bench. if it don't comply with the above statement. the lower and upper are out of time so to speak, separate them and see if the lower shifts manually. if so, put everybody if fwd. and reassemble..

one other thought. the shift slide spins easy on the shift cable. when putting the drive back on, you must be sure the slide stays in it's proper place and don't rotate so it stays mated to the shift lever...

Re: Shifting Issues

Thanks for the advice. I was told always take the drive off in forward. So i thinks i have it backwards The prop locks cw and ratchets ccw. the drive shifts fine when the togther and split. forward and reverse both work I just forgot which way is forward on the prop. The reason why I took the drive off was a new gimbal bearing and lower water pump base. Now Im trying to figure out forward lol.

that's true, if you're gonna remove the whole drive. the shift shaft coupler has to be facing fwd. to allow the drive to slide off. if your only removing the lower, i don't believe it has to be in fwd. but it is easier just to stay consistent.

So i thinks i have it backwards The prop locks cw and ratchets ccw
that's perfect, if your in reverse. which from the description, your not. your in fwd. is that correct?

separate the lower from upper, put everyone in fwd. (prop lock ccw, helm in full fwd.), use bondos idea about the bungee to keep the prop loaded in the ccw direction, it works great, and reassemble.. hang in there, you'll get it...

food for thought, it sure is easier to reassemble the upper to the lower on the bench. but it certainly can be done on the boat too. just more painful to do. imho...

If you forgot the washer in the picture below it will not shift. (Easy to forget! ;) ):

Re: Shifting Issues

Just to follow up, because I got lost trying to follow all the ccw and cw's... :D

When you have the lower off, go ahead and put it in forward gear. You will need to turn the shift shaft (pictured above) CLOCKWISE when looking down at it all the way while turning the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE till it locks in place. You are now in forward gear. Use the bungee strap or duct tape on the prop to keep it in gear. Remember the washer - make sure the helm is in forward gear and put it together.

Good luck!
