Posting for a friend:

2001 Alpha 1 Gen 2 only tilts down when under hard throttle. Will tilt up no problem.

Any suggestions?

Go up to the adults only sticky at the top of the forum and download service manual #14. There is a section on troubleshooting the hydraulic system. You will need the gauge unit for testing pressures for the down system.
Could also be the trim cylinders binding. This a salt water boat that spends a lot of time in the water?

Gotcha. I have it and will look through it.. Looks like as per page 509 we are in for that pressure test. Not sure where we could locate a gauge though.. any suggestions? Ebay says none, and boy is it no fun buying a single serving tool!

This is a salt water boat that lives its life on a lift in front of an open bay. Not sure about the previous owners though.. they may have kept her in the water.

Don or anyone:

Is there a way to isolate whether or not the problem is the trim cylinder binding without sourcing a pressure gauge and going through the pump test process?

We are leaning to the cylinder binding, but it would be nice to have some kind of test..

Ayuh,... It's either Gauge the pressure, or tear the cylinders apart,+ Look...

Thanks Bond-o..

So basically it is most likely one or the other?

What I don't understand is.. if it may be a cylinder binding, why would it trim up with no problems?
