Is there any other auto parts supplier like JCWhitney? I havent ever found one. They seem rather unique in the auto parts world.

I think they have cornered the market on aftermarket accessories and the "universal" parts that fit nothing exactly and everthing with a little modification.

Know of any other company like them?

I have used Rock Auto.com and get great prices and fast shipping..
Most of the stuff they have is vehicle specific though.

JC Whitney is in a class of its own...:)

Sierra and Mallory both come to mind on the marine side.

I have bought from autobarn.com, and they have very good customer service,
if you have occasion for that. I don't know about generic parts, though.

I have an old, old, old Whitney thin walled socket set that I was sure I would
throw out after I broke them, but I have broke others, and still have the old,
old, old Whitney set. Going strong yet!

Just for giggles, I googled "auto parts supplier" and got 1.5M hits.

I was looking for a replacement for the cabin light in the boat. The lens on it is cracked and yellowed, and now having the hard top, it could use a light too. So I checked with JCWhitney and they had a few. Went searching for competitive prices and products and didn't find any other auto parts retailer like Whitney.

I did end up finding the same lighting products by Bargman at a better price and selection at a camper supply. But it took a while to find it!

BTW, a lot of accessory lighting being sold as "marine" lighting is just typical camper lighting that is sold a much lower prices at the camper supply. Especially the LED surface mount lights.

Now if they could just bring down the price of LED lighting...:)

My favorite JC Whitney story has to do with a 1960 Ford truck my Dad bought in the mid 70s. It wasn't too bad (had a paint-brush two-tone job;) and my dad cleaned it up pretty good. He ordered a seat cover and a rubber floor mat from JC Whitney, looked about the same as the torn and worn oem floor mat in the cat. Lo and behold, the floor mat came in a box imprinted with "Ford Motor Company" and the Ford emblem. The mat itself had a Ford label attached to it.

We concluded it was an oem Ford product and not a repop. It fit perfectly too.

You need to take a walk in a junk yard and look at the various lights inside junked cars. Hit up radio schack for led's and put together your own bulb assemblies.

Bob, the salvage yards around here don't let people wander the yard anymore like they did 20 years ago. My guess is its insurance related, but don't know for sure. The days of climbing in and around cars looking for what ever you need is a thing of the past in NJ. Too bad, because I used to find some neat things to add to my car, like map lights, nicer knobs, etc.
