I think much of the 60s used the same lower end, I mean they "look" the same but there could be subtle differences. I think the 60 through 85 hp used the same unit. The difference will be whether or not you want electric or mechanical shift. You can shift a mechanical unit when it off the motor to try to determine if it turns smoothly. Also, you'll need to get a shift handle, linkage and lower motor cover if you convert.

what is recommended? electric or mechanical i would assume electrical but im new to these larger outboards

where is the best place to find one of those lower units?

Not in my garage.
If you have a marina that has a bone yard there might be one laying around. There were lots of V-4s in the 60's, now it's just finding one that still has some life in it. I saw some rebuilt ones on the online auction sites. You could try them.
