Is This board Stock??

Hello Everyone,
Im getting ready to install a new CMC tilt trim unit along with a rebuilt and freshly painted 76 Johnson on my 78 Starcraft. I'm wondering if the 1/2'' plywood board on the transom was installed as a factory item? It was in pretty sad shape so I removed thinking it was added in the past by someone to make up thickness for another outboard. Anyway, after removal the is no paint underneath if, just bare aluminum.

Do I need this extra piece of ply or can I repaint the transon and install the tilt trim unit/outboard?

Mine had it too and it looked stock. However it was completely rotted and when I replaced the transom I didn't put one back one. No ill effects.

That was my thinking also but wanted a second opinion. I may reinstall it just to cover where there is no paint. I plan to repaint the hull this fall and will more than likely leave it off then.
