Re: Stiff flywheel

Make sure that you are in neutral and remove all of the sparkplugs; you should be able to turn the flywheel clockwise with one hand. If you can't, try removing the gearcase to be sure that is not the problem.

Most 70HP motors are fairly high compression and tough to rope start; you need a powerful and fully charged battery, excellent battery cables and perfect connections to crank them properly.

Re: Stiff flywheel

The flywheel is just a big round piece of metal and is not attached to anything but the crankshaft. I'd make darn sure that is was not in the starter circuit before doing anything else. See the "TOP SECRET post at the top of the forum (outboard won't start...). After thoroughly and carefully troubleshooting the electrical system, then you might pull the lower end (gearcase) off, take the plugs out and try again. It could be that the problem is in the gearcase.

Remove the spark plugs and lube up the cylinders with oil.

How long has it been sitting?

Re: Stiff flywheel

Cheers for the replies, it was starting fine up until 3 months ago so i thought the battery had lost its charge so I replaced it, still didn't start, I then replaced the brushes in the starter motor, replaced the battery cables still no joy, was thinking of replacing the solenoid as its the only thing that hasn't been replaced. Could the solenoid have become faulty even though i'm getting the click sound on ignition?. And yes Tex I read the "outboard won't start" page a few times. Cheers again. Dan.

Re: Stiff flywheel

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Stiff flywheel

The battery cables corrode inside the sheathing and cannot carry the load. Try using jumper cables and if that works, replace your battery cables.
