9 hp Recoil Starter Won't Pull

The recoil starter handle on my 8 hp Yamaha outboard won't allow me to pull the rope to engage the starter. It is not in gear. any suggestions?

take the spark plug out, if wet with oil let it drain. after its dried out return the dried off spark plug and try. this will happen when the motor is set on the wrong side and oil leaks into the piston. hope this helps

We had this same problem with my neighbor's 8 hp last week. Check the flywheel "interlock" setup.. it's a cable and pin that stops the flywheel from turning when the motor is in gear. The cable can stick and not kick back all the way, even when the motor is in neutral. It's on the left side of the flywheel from the tiller side of the motor.. can't miss it. Pull on the cable a bit and see if it will release the recoil cord.
