Hi Guys.I just got a small fiberglass flat bottom skiff. Its a 9' Whaler knock off thats in great shape except for the plywood in the transom which is badly rotted with thin fiberglass over the plywood which is inside the 1/4 inch hull.I was thinking about cutting through the thin glass and removing the plywood and replacing it with solid mahogany scribed to fit the hull and being a few pieces laid up to get the 13 1/2 width.I am a finish carpenter and could spline the wood and glue it up solid like a butcher block countertop.using Stainless hardware bolt it to the transom.I was then thinking about putting a piece of aluminum plate where my OB would go.What do you guys think,I am trying to avoid fiberglass work.

Re: Fiberglass/wood transom rebuild advice needed

I have a 12' whaler knock off and the transom had a 12" by 12" piece of 3/4 plywood attached to the inside of the hull and a 5" by 12" piece of plywood attached outside the hull with some fiberglasss overlay. The rear seat was fiberglass that attached to the transom and over part of the 12x12 plywood. I cut out the rear seat and removed all plywood and scribed a piece of red rosin paper to fit the inside of the entire rear transom. I transfered this to 3/4 plywood and used 1718 biax with epoxy resin to attach to the transom a second piece inside is attached over the full transom board but only measures about 18 x 12 to get the 1 1/2 thickness. I will try to post some pics next weekend of my progress
