Paddle wheel mounts on the transom so the bottom edge of the paddle wheel extends slightly below the bottom of the boat. Run the cable to the helm and plug it into the speedometer. The speedometer itself should have an "I" (ignition) or +12 volt terminal. That connects to the "A" (accessory) terminal on the ignition switch, or to the "I" terminal on any other gauge. The ground trminal is connected to the ground bus or to the ground terminal on any other gauge. If the gauge has an internal light it connects to the "L" (light) terminal on any other gauge or to the NAV light switch.
The wiring coming from the paddle wheel includes a red (positive), black (ground) and a bare wire (not sure what that is?). On the back of the speedometer I have an I (ignition), a G (Ground), an L (light), but I also have an "S". What would that be for?
So would I be safe to assume that the red wire would then get connected to the "s" terminal? If the bare wire is getting connected to the ground, then where do I connect the black wire to? Sorry to ask so many questions is just that the speedometer came without any paperwork at all and my boat does not currently have one in it.
I'm hoping someone can give me a hand on this. I have installed the speedometer and it is not working. I have connect the red wire to the "S" terminal, the shield wire and the black ground to the "G" terminal. I have connect a wire from the "I" terminal to direct power from the battery through a switch. Is there anything I am doing wrong?
You don't need a switch in the wire going to the "I" terminal. That terminal should be connected to the "I" terminal on any other gauge or to the "A" (accessory) terminal on the ignition switch. That way the gauge is active only when the key is on. You just added compexity where it wasn't needed. The braid and ground wires can be connected together and attached to the ground terminal on the gauge.
