i recently purchased a used boat with a 1983 20hp Chrysler outboard motor (model 252h3g) when i purchased it the seller started the motor and it fired up on the first pull. i got it home didnt use it for about 2 weeks went to start it and it would not start. the only difference is it did not come with the fuel line/primer bulb or tank that the seller was using, i purchased both (new). when i try to prime it the primer bulb does not get hard and after a few pumps i notice raw fuel coming out of the exhaust. it is geting very good spark and i was told i had the fuel line on backwards (i had arrow towards the motor) so i turned it around and it started and ran until it ran out of fuel, then when i turned ther line back around it would not start and has not fire up since. i am pretty sure it is a fuel problem just not sure what as it seems to be getting fuel due to it coming out the exhaust. i have checked the carb and it seems clean i cleaned the float valve just to be sure with no effect. thanks in advance for any help, i am new to boating and new to this forum so i apoligize if i posted this in the wrong place.

Normally when there is fuel coming out it is coming out of the carburator. Your fuel pump should be similar to the one here in the pic. Your primer and gas line is going to the fuel pump and then from there it should be going to the carb. Is this the way yours is set up?

fyi, i was messing around with it today and i pulled the top spark plug out and decided to squirt some fuel in just to see what happened...after about 4 pulls it started and then shut off. what gives do i need carb rebuild? float adjustment, fuel pump? i did notice when it started it has a high idle, could this be contributing to the problem or just coincidence? please help!!!! thanks:confused:
