Just wondering if anyone has any useful tips?

Like how is the shift linkage to disconnect?

Get a manual it should be pretty straight forward. The one tip that I can give is on reassembly. I have a merc 125 and the manual stated to put it in fwd disassemble. When putting it back together reverse the procedure. There is more play in the forward direction then in the reverse. I would suggest putting it in reverse. I followed the manual to replace impeller. Had a good stream out of telltale and thought everything was good. Got to the marina to back my boat off and I was going forward instead of reverse. Seems like a common mistake according to the many posts on this issue. Search the threads the answers I got were very detailed by knowledgeable people. They are the ones that suggested the reverse deal and it worked out great for me. One more suggestion is the manual suggests the red locktite (nonremovable for the impeller bolts) The consensus was that, that is not a great idea. I just used the blue stuff. If you plan on doing regular maintenance on your motor you don't want to deal with hearing stuff up to remove it.

Just my 2 cents. Not an expert just letting you know what I learned the hard way.

Thanks...I appreciate the info.
Forward gear when dropping the lower then reverse when installing it..

This is a job i'm doing for someone and don't want to have to go back and drop the lower again..
I always use the loctite blue...the red is just too strong..

My post must have been a little confusing. The important part is in the installation. When removing I would put it in reverse then service and then if you don't move the shift shaft everything should line up. After you disconnect the lower unit the shift shaft will be obvious how it works. The reverse on my motor had very little play but when you shifted it into forward you could swing the shift rod a half a turn or more which is why it is harder to get it set in forward (more room for error).

On mine the lower unit just came off after unbolting it. The shift shaft just lines up with a spline in the upper half of the unit. Easy to take off the trick is lining it backup when reassembling. There is also a water tube on mine that should be lubricated on reassembly. The water tube and the shift shaft are the two things you have to get lined up on reassembly. Easier than it might sound actually. Once I got the reverse trick it lined right up for me good luck.

I have done many Johnson-Evinrude and I/O lowers but the Merc outboards i'm still learning..
Sounds pretty straight forward and i do have a service manual for a similar bigfoot lower...

Thanks for the help!
