I got the boat back the other day from having a new lower unit impeller and oil change done, three days later I notice a drip coming from what he called a weep hole in the front of the lower unit(across from the propeller) The marina now states that the lower seal or upper seal is probably gone. Two options fix both for about 700.00 or just run it as is and keep an eye on the oil. He says it is a water overflow weep hole? 79 merc 140hp with an io. I would think that when he put the new impeller on, he should have either inspected the seal and informed me about it, or have me replace it right away. It doesn't drip that bad, but i don't like any leaks of any kind. How big a job is this? I have rebuilt many a hot rod in my day, any special tools? thanks in advance. bob

I have a feeling that when they split the case apart, they forgot the tiny o-ring (Usually orange) that seals the oil passage way between the two halfs. It is gear lube that is dripping correct ? Do a pressure test on the gear case, only pump up to 7 psi and see if it leaks down. A good shop will always (I do anyway) pressure test a gear case after a impeller service. Your outdrive is now on borrowed time if you run it like that.

Could it not also be the shift shaft seal?

Could also be the seals on the water pump base.

yep, i think so too...

yep, that'd a been the time to go after the seal. when it was apart. the above mentioned pressure test would have helped isolate the issue at hand...

i think you should address the issue. if lub is leaking out. water might me leaking in. either or could be bad news if you let it go i'd think..

ya might consider going to a different shop too. i agree with scott. ya always do the pressure test after seperating the upper from the lower. or doing any work on the drive where seals are present..

mphy98, you did see this from the adults only sticky didn't you? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1573303#post1573303

They obviously forgot something. I changed my own impeller, and the lower unit oil, and I have no leaks. I am willing to bet that they did not seal it. Ya gotta watch these people cutting corners, anytime I have anything worked on, I am watching like a hawk, and asking a million questions, even if they do seem stupid. I think they should get the bill for that one.
