got a line on a motor and outdrive for my boat. boat is an 89 bayliner capri, originally with 2.3l/cobra outdrive. both are now gone, completely. i'm down to bare transom, which is good. now, motor i'm looking at is from '87 bluewater. it's a 4.3l, which i already know is a damn good motor. according to hour meter, a little over 100 hours. the outdrive is a merc alpha 1, i assume gen 1. this brings me to question and input needed. how good is the alpha 1? i've heard everything from good to horrible, so i guess it's a matter of opinion. this will be a cruiser type boat, not much skiing or anything. the whole boat with running motor, outdrive and all, and trailer is $500. i assume this is a badass deal, fairly straightforward swap. but alot have said stay away from alpha 1. input?
