Re: motor wont start

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, angel. Do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

Did it start for you before, or did you just buy it and can't get it started? Makes a difference. Have you done minor checks like are the plugs sparking? Is it getting fuel? We really need more information to help.

Re: motor wont start

ok..more info on my motor. we've had the boat since 1976. would always start. it has been sitting a few years since the lake dried up. there are sparks from the plugs, and it smells like fuel is getting thru the carb. to me it looks like the timing is off, but i never really noticed where it was suppost to be. the nearest boat repair is 1hr away, but $$$$ are tight right now. need to boat to relieve some stress. thanks for all help available.

well it nobody messed with the timing from last time you used it till now...its probably not off. I'd suspect that the carbs are dirty and fuel pumps might be bad since its been sitting so long.

OK! Simple test! Remove the plugs and put about one teaspoonfull of fuel premix into each cylinder. Replace the plugs and crank. If it clears itself then starts and runs till the prime runs out (a couple of seconds) then you have a fuel delivery problem.
