Hi everyone, long time reader first time posting. I have a coworker offering me his old bayliner for a few hundred dollars, and after looking at it I'm not really sure if I wouldn't just be buying into mor eof a money pit than I can handle so I thought I might get some advice from people that have been down this road before.
it's an '83 capri 19.5 ft with a volvo penta I/O supposed to be rated at 125 hp. The motor will start but it's dificult to keep at idle he thinks it's either in the timing or maybe the fuel pump, but he doesn't know. he did not winterize it last year but in oklahoma we have pretty mild winters so maybe not an issue? Possible to swap in a SBC instead?
The outdrive will need a full new set of seals as he took it apart and put it back together without replacing any seals, said it now leaks oil, but it does still start run move etc so at least he maybe got it all back in the right places.
The hull seems to be in good shape with no discoloration cracks or anything else that I can see, but the interior looks to be completely destroyed where it's not missing all together and the floor flexes baddly enough that more than one person on it right now would probably cause it to collapse in.
I think that about sums it up, sorry for the rambling post but I wanted to get all the info that I think I have on it out there and get some seasoned opinions on this as far as cost, and effort vs return, particularly for this kind of boat.
Thanks
