ok, i know there are a whole lot of other topics about this but i can't find exactly what im looking for so here goes:

i have a mercruiser 120 that has a small crack in the block a few inches above the core plugs. i don't think its a real serious problem but im still trying to find out. the water runs out as a small trickle down the side of the engine. i ran the boat NO MORE than 2 mins this season on muffs and then changed the oil. after that was when i noticed the leak. i didn't notice any water in the oil when i changed it. my question: how obvious would it be to tell if water is getting into the oil? with such a small crack, would it raise the oil level?

please give any insight on this matter. thanks for the help.

im planning on using the jd weld theory on it if its not serious, if anybody cares :)

repair on the outside of the block has been successful for some. The issue is, is it cracked inside? Put it in the water and run it underload. Check for milky oil.

All you have to do is pull the dipstick or oil filler cap after running it under load for a bit and you will be able to tell if the oil is contaminated. Usually it will look milky or thick and pasty. If you run it for too long this way the pistons could sieze!

I found the exact same thing today on my gm 350. I plan on running it on muffs a little more in the morning and checking for water in the oil, then cleaning out the crack and using a jb wled like stuff my self. thought the auto parts store by me had metioned a different type of weld/epoxy that is capable of high temp. so lets keep our fingers crosed for no water were it dont belong.

good luck
