Does anyone know if the bendix ever go bad. My motor will not engage. I had the starter rebuilt and still does the same thing. The starter turnes and the bendix does not raise at all to engage the flywheel. Does this sound like the bendix is bad or can someone suggest something else. I have tried jumping right to the starter to trouble shoot any bad wires to the starter and still does the same thing. Starter turns which turns the other gear and turns the bendix but does not raise the bendix up to the flywheel. I really dont want to take it in but dont want to dump money on a bendix if it is not the problem. Thanks for any help.

If the starter is turning in the proper direction and turning over as fast as it should (very fast), the problem is usually that someone has greased the bendix gear assembly...... which is a no no. Grease and/or oil collects dirt which results in binding the gear to the splines.

Clean the bendix assembly and simply spray WD40 on it (No Grease).

I have cleaned the bendix and put some 3/1 oil on it. Still does not work. Any other ideas what it might be or does this sound like it is the bendix? Thanks for all the help.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Can you turn the gear with your hand and make it raise up on the shaft? If not, that is your problem. Maybe the gear is rusted or slightly stripped. If you can raise it up manually, observe which way the starter needs to turn to make the gear go up and make sure it turns that way. On the permanent magnet starters, if the magnet is installed upside down, the starter spins the wrong way. I do not know if your starter has a permanent magnet, BTW.
