I have a 82 evinrude 35hp that has developed a bad cough. It is a consistant cough from partial to full throttle and is getting worse. I have gone thru fuel issues and ignition, all seems OK. Thought maybe it was prop slippage but new prop proved me wrong. I did discover this symptom is only present in forward. Any ideas or how do I check for lower unit problems.

Cough, like in a coughing noise coming from the carb (not a backfire through the exhaust) ?

No, it is definetly not out of the carb, and it isnt really a backfire out the exhaust. The motor coughs/jerks a bit and keeps going until it does it again in 5 seconds or so. Acts just like your running into a log every 5 seconds. Best description would be a bad miss on a single cylinder engine, except for its not.

clutch dog and forward gear. make sure you cables are adjusted correctly. disconnect cable at motor and shift at motor. has the Lower unit been off recently?

I was thinking that same direction, as seems like I have tried everything else. I did replace water pump but problem was there before that. Not sure I know how to adjust properly other than making sure it goes into all three gears just fine, apparently it just doesn't want to stay in forward. Any thing I should watch out for when I tear into this? Thanks

Re: evinrude cough

Sounds similar to what I've been going through for past 3 seasons. 1987 8 HP would very intermittently "cough or miss" while running at higher speed. Started out so infrequently that I just decided to live with it. Each season it would get a little more frequent until this year it would "cough" long enough for me to actually check a few things while running in a barrel at home. When symptoms started , I used a timing light and saw that spark on both cylinders was intermittent and coil/laminate ***'y voltage would drop while coughing. I replaced the coil/laminate ***'y 1st since it was cheaper but it actually was the power pack causing the problem. Just a thought......

Re: evinrude cough

Thanks for the thoughts. I ruled out fuel, then went on to ignition. So no signs of misfire on timing light. Problem was present on either cylinder, replaced ignition module anyway and pickup, but same problem. Guess I was hoping for something topend that was easier or more familier to fix. I am confident it is not fuel or ignition related, but I certainly appreciate the response. I am actually trying to fix this for my son and his friend so they can go fishing, seems like thats better than them sitting around playing video games. Thanks again

Might want to drain lower unit oil and look for metal. If it's been slipping gears, you're likely to find at least some metal.
