I have a 1979 85hp johnson seahorse with a choke issue. with the key on or in start the choke flaps always stay completely closed. the solenoid is always hot. I dont know where to start to try to figure this out if anyone can help it would be appreciated. if you need more information let me know. I have already rebuilt carbs, replaced fuel pump, new plugs and wires. where should i start?

The choke solenoid gets its positive feed from the ignition switch so start by disconnecting the purple and white wire from it at the engine.

With your battery disconnected, use your ohmmeter to test the ignition switch "C" post. It should be hot only when the key is pushed in.

if ignition is bad you can always use a push button switch for the choke. just mount it on the console.
