drainage system for stingers--input welcome

i originally thought that putting a drainage system in for the outside stringers would be a good idea. and now i'm second guessing myself. i was thinking that if it had a drainage system originally, then it would never get to the point of rot that i'm at now. but on the other hand, if the P/O diddn't drill holes through the hull, and if the gas line going under the deck was sealed properly then no water would have gotten down there to begin with. you also have the problem with adding a drainage system that you now leave those untouched areas succeptable to water to move in freely.

so i guess i'll get to the question, is it better to seal off those compartments and take confidence in your glassing job, or put a drainage system in? ( i plan on fully covering all stringers and the bottom side of the deck) barring no catastrophic hull damage you should never have to worry about water in there if you do a good glassing job right?

let the debate start O-o

Hi there Smeag

Well there is nothing to Debate here , and you answered your own question , Its better to glass her all in and also add the drainage .from front to back , I cut 1 1/2 pvc tube in half and glassed it in on the center stringer !!

Also you need to coat your wood before you glass , I used polyurethane on mine 3 coats.

If you do a good job , and take care of her she should last 30 plus years !!!! John

I put drainage in mine.Im a man not perfect and my work isnt perfect. So if I figure my glass wont be perfect.Well then a drain it is.Just my 2 cents.

I aggree with John. I would put some typr of drainage in like the pvc. Just make sure you seal everything very good and take your time. Rushing anything will just cause regret. Good Luck.

John, when it comes to your split PVC down the center stringer, how does this work? I assume after reading through your massive thread, that the pvc goes to the bow and is open there? then it runs back to the bilge? how does water that enters the outsidemost stringers get to the pvc drain? The way I see it through your pictures is that it would only allow water forward of the bow bulkhead to drain back to the bilge. Fill me in here as I like the idea but cant wrap my head around it...

There's no such thing as a sealed compartment on a boat.

Yes, there are some that are close, but generally there's no spot that will always be completely dry. I think it's better to plan for water getting in and give it a way to get out than to seal a compartment and never have any way to verify whether water gets in or not and just take it on faith.

If water gets in and doesn't get out, what happens? Especially with foam there?

Putting it another way, most of the people on this board who are doing deck, stringer, and transom replacements are doing them on boats that had sealed compartments from the factory.....

Hay Chris, thats where you got to make sure you seal that area !! you are right my drainage is just from the bow back.I am petty confident that water not going to get in there now, all the edges have 2 or 3 layers of e-glass and epoxy , and then when I glassed in the deck, I poured epoxy over the hole top of the deck.

Some one did just that they also added dains in from the bulk heads on the sides , but me and oops talked about this quit a bite, and if you really glass her in good you shouldn't have to worry about it, sure there is all was going to be a little water get in there no matter what but thats where is you take care of her when she not in the water keep here covered , let her dry out on the nice summer day with the cover off you should be fine !!!

I just got some more glass for just this and I want to add a couple battery spot, but the main reason it in the side bow seats on my outer wing is hollow under the bow seat and not glassed very well so i am adding a few layers to it !!!

And on mine the outer wings I couldnt add drainage to the bottom cause it v's out there down . so i just filled them with foam and that where i want to add some glass to the very front of that v .

Ok Hope this helps a little !! lol John

I agree with others above, nothing is so sealed water will never get in. Water finds a way, just ask the 3 barrels of rotten wood I hauled out of the boat. I'll add placing drain holes where ALL water will drain is equally important. Some of the drain holes in my boat were originally 1" above the bottom, so no matter what, 1" of water would always be trapped!

I plan on putting drainage in the rear, so water will need to move from front to back, then downhill to the bilge. Doing this will allow my stringers to remain one solid piece except for a hole at the very stern (about 1" in front of the transom). This way, when the boat sits in the yard (bow up) it will have a natural drain system, whether the water gets between the stringers or outside of them.

Ok, I will reply to what you just said as soon as you tell the Redwings to at least let the Jackets win one game! Only by a point, then they can hand us our purse and let us go home...call the dogs off man, save a little energy for the next round.

I had these same questions as you when I pulled up the carpet to fix a soft spot in the deck in November.I had figured any water always drained to the bilge. There may be better ways but here is how I dealt with that issue as well as redoing almost all the wood below deck and redecking above.
Good luck with your project!http://picasaweb.google.com/pacerdude/EntireDeckReplacement89Celebrity224se#
