I have a 1996 Johnson 150 Oceanrunner and I am having an issue with it stalling. When I first start it I have to prime the bulb after each attempt. Once its started if its in neautral it will eventually die or when I go to put it in gear and just putting forward it will die. I'll check the bulb and its only about half full and need to pump it hard again. Each time I go to start I have to use the choke. If I increase the RPM's it runs beautiful and the bulb gets alittle soft. I use ethanol free gas, new gas lines and fuel water seperator, carbs rebuilt last year, no air leaks in the lines. I believe the fuel pump which is VRC is the original. Before I spend that much i would like to get an opinion if its time to change it.

will it idle on muffs? if so increase idle speed. do you pull plug wires to make sure it is running on all cylinders? idle speed has to be fine tuned in the water with the motor in forward.

I would check to see if any of teh carbs are leaking. Check the bottom of the outboard for any fuel. The carbs may have been rebuilt but maybe one is bad. I had the smae problem last year and thats what it was.

I would check from the fuel pump to the tank first, even trying a portable gas tank and hose to eliminate the possibility of a clogged pickup or anti-siphon valve, primer or vent.

Your OMS pump is an excellent pump, much improved over the VRO.

Thanks for the replys, i checked the carbs and have nothing leaking. I do noticed that if I prime the bulb till its hard within 30 seconds its 1/4 way soft, and after about a minute it's halfway soft

you have a leak some where, either carb float needle, or fitting, or bad check valve in bulb.

Re: 1996 Johnson 150 fuel problem

I am ordering the factory service manual as I gathered it's worth the extra money and I will get the rebuild kits for the carbs. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I went back out and took the air cover off and when i squeezed the buld solid a few seconds later i heard a puff of air come from one of the carbs.
