I work in Philadelphia and see her when driving across the Walt Whitman bridge. It would be a shame to NOT see this beauty be transformed back into her original elegance.

That is very true, only 1 of a few classic liners still around.

Fisherdan, how do you work out the time share on that deal and if I get in I want to drive it.

Will work just like any other boat partnership I've been involved in. You can go when ever you want, but it's probably going to be a tad crowded on Memorial Day, 4th, Labor Day... Plus, anyone who does their fair share on the boat can drive.... Just don't do something stupid like driving into an iceberg, island, freighter, cause what you break you fix :D

All joking aside, it would be a shame to see something like that be scrapped. I wonder how long it's been docked?

I'm in! I say we fix her up, arm ourselves to the teeth and go deal with the Somali pirates!

I'd rather weld than lay fiberglass any day!

An anachronism in it's own time, but it was definitely not a Titanic, nor did it really ever have to face the spectre of outrunning U-boats. Here is an interesting read on it.

Still, I wonder if it ever paid for itself and returned a profit? (subsidy aside)

Im pretty sure my wife would have a problem with that in the driveway, I hear enough with the old 15' Seaking taking up the garage right now. I wonder how she trolls? Definatelly would need power down riggers and a really long net.

Uboats wouldn't be a problem for her with a top speed of 38 knots, and a flanking speet of "44kn held for 15 min during her see trials".

Re: SS United States National Flagship in Danger

I'm all for preserving old ships, and this one would seem to be worth it, but I'm not at all in favor of contacting my congressman.

I presume you mean that we should convince him and therefore the government to divert money from something else to save this ship, or to allocate budget money to do it.

I think a lot of people are realizing lately the government isn't a big pool of free money, someone will eventually have to pay for all the spending, and it's the taxpayers. Between wars and stimulus packages, my bill is big enough.

The thing about writing a congressman to get this saved is that it's less honest than asking for donations... a congressman is less work to convince, sure, but that just means that you're taking the path of least resistance to spend everyone's money on something you judge to be important. Anyone not wanting to spend the money still has to do so, because it's out of their hands. In theory they are represented by the congress, but in fact the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I think that's exactly the same thing that lobbyists do today... use government contacts as a back door to get their hands on public money.

If you want to save this ship, start writing letters to people, corporations, organizations, etc asking for donations, hit the pavement and shake some hands.

Erik

PS: Mods, can you move this thread to dockside chat, since it's not really a restore thread?

When I say contact your congressmen im not saying take money away, im saying protect her from being scrspped. If she would be restored she would create jobs, and restore Americas pride:p.

PS How do I move it to dockside chat?

One of the admins will have to move it for you.

Think what you're saying through... how would a congressman protect her, other than by providing money? He can put an earmark in a bill to get money put aside for her, more pork there. He can put a provision or rider into a bill forbidding the ship to be scrapped, instead requiring her to be given to a museum or town... which a court would toss out as an illegal law by requiring confiscation of goods without due process.

Whether a Senator or Congressman, he/she has no legal authority to order anything at all, other than writing laws to get the government to spend money (from our taxes) or to mandate that federal, state, or local government do something without additional funding (effectively re-tasking money already budgeted).

They may know people in the government that have authority to stop her scrapping, but I think trying to make that happen is ethically worse than trying to spend public money on her... you're trying to use the US government like it was an "old boy" network then.

If you want to do something I'll support here, then get your congressman to make a law that says any money spent toward restoration of a historic marine vessel is deductible from personal or corporate taxes.

Then you'd see some corps stepping up to look good by donating money to her restoration, money that would go straight into supplies of steel, furnishings, fuel, and workman's salaries in the shipyard, which would help the economy.

Plus, I'd be back in the black again myself. What's not to like?

Erik

PS: No restoring of pride needed here. I'm proud of most of my countrymen, currently proud of our president, and proud of my family.

National Flagship in danger

Many historical ocean liners are, or are in danger of being scrapped. However recently announced by NCL the SS United States, Americas National Flagship has been put up for sale. She will not be sold for scrap, but were only half way there. Please Help Save the SS United States. Another American built liner, last one built in America is also in grave danger, the SS Independence.

Re: National Flagship in danger

Pretty presumptuous calling a commercial cruise liner "America's National Flagship". She may well be the flagship of NCL (National Cruise Lines?), but that gives her no official status. She is an elegant, but obsolete and nonprofitable commercial vessel.

Your post comes very close to solicitation, which is not allowed.

S. Toth - My office is in an academic building at USMMA called Gibbs Hall named after the designer of The Big U. In 1982 I sailed engineer on the SS American Apollo, a US Lines container ship. The second engineer was on The Big U for her sea trials and beamed when he told the story of crossing the pond averaging over 35 knots and beating the Brits record on Queen Mary.
I recently was informed another vessel I sailed , an MSC oiler USNS Truckee was scrapped last month. I was aboard her with the CV69 Eisenhower task force during the "Kadafi crisis" doing underway replenishment.
Unfortunately, older vessels are not economically viable to update, refurbish, insure, etc.. and go to the mothball fleet until being picked up for scrap. I hope the Big U can avoid that fate and finds a home. Last I heard she is falling into disrepair in the Philly yards.
I'm behind ya!!!!!!

JB-No, She is not NCL's flagship, she was created in 1952, long before ncl. Shes an ocean liner, the fastest in the WORLD full spead-38kn flanking spead-44kn. SS United States was built in collaboration with the United States Navy. Trust me she is and will always be Americas ship of state.
