Howdy guys!

Been lurking this great forum for a couple of months and decided it was time for me to pitch in!

Some background (try to bear with me, if you don't like reading so much, then scroll down to see the pics:D):

I'm from El Salvador, Central America. I'm 36, married and father of two beautiful kids.
My first boat was a small 10' runabout, which I picked up for $275 (no motor and trailer) and did some DIY pimping (designed a trailer and had it made for me; built a custom bimini top from scratch, installed controls and steering for a 25HP Evinrude, made my own benches, drink holders and rod holders:) ), came out pretty good considering it was my first time working on a boat. It was a great learning experience.

I must admit, the boating bug was passed on to me by my inlaw (who passed away this last summer :( ); he had been boating for 30 years, and was a great mentor, teacher and friend. He had 3 boats: a 1974 13' Gregor Aluminum V hull powered by a 25HP Evinrude, a 1978'ish 14' Cathedral hull Thunderbird bowrider powered by a Johnson V4 85 Javelin and a 1990 20' Four Winns 207 Quest Center console.
Unluckily for us, my wife has two half brothers, and my inlaw died without a will, so they were entitled to inherit too. We decided to keep the house and let the boats and cars go.
That left me with my 10' footer only, and no boat to ride with my whole family and friends.

So I decided, what the heck, I'm going to bite the bullet and get a new boat.

My new toy (and first real boat) is a Glastron SSV170 bowrider. I ordered it with a Yamaha F75 four stroke EFI, a factory bimini top and a Continental aluminum trailer. Placed the order last November, and received the boat this month.

I now have a nice boat to drive my family around and to teach my kids how to ski :D:D

So without further ado, here's my new boat!

Cheers!

Great job on the boat. Bowriders are very good family boats I think. I currently have an 18' bowrider as a starter. Maybe in a couple years upgrade to a 23' cuddy or something. Anyways, that is a sharp looking boat. Congrats.

Very sharp looking boat. With a brand new Yammi that thing should provide many many years of fun for your family.

Nice boat. I like the smoked, low profile windshield.

Hey....we are missing the picture of those two guys heaving the motor up on the transom!!
Great looking boat, and that Yamaha should do you well. All the ones I have owned have been super motors. Good job..:)

Re: My first real boat!

Thanks a lot for all your kind words guys, really appreciate them:)

I too expect having a long term trouble free fun on the water with my family!

When lurking I sensed a great community here at Iboats...I was not mistaken:D

Yeah, I ommited many pics, I guessed posting more than 10 would be bragging:rolleyes:; beleive me, I have tons!

I was surprised the Yamaha service guys didn't bring a crane to lift the OB; 6 guys did the job, and then left the mechanic to do his setup job. I was there all the time.

I have to be honest, without my inlaw, I feel like hollow, without a great source of marine knowledge and wisdom, but I know in time, and with all of your help, I'll become a good boater!

Thanks again, and I'm glad I joined.

Cheers!

Go ahead and post more...you can't post too many and there is no such thing as bragging when your first real boat is involved.

Nice looking boat, Let us know how she performs once you get her wet.

Just a note. It looks like your motor is mounted a little low. The cavitation plate is usually even with the bottom of the transom and then adjusted depending on performance.

Could just be the angle of the pics though.

Re: My first real boat!

The actual moment when the guys were lifting it and placing it in the transom, I left the camera aside and was ready to assist if necesary, so no pics of that:rolleyes:

Jkust, I'll resize some more pics and post them later on in the day.

Rrhodes, the cavitation plate is actually a tad lower than the bottom of the transom, but not as low as the pic shows, it must be the angle. I'll test it as it is now, and if it needs adjusting, it'll be done:) BTW, in what does this affect the boat performance?

The boat was factory pre-rigged for this exact OB.

There are some adjustments to be done. The trailer/boat is not balanced; it's about 9" too far forward and the tongue weight is just too much (I'll make another thread about that), so I have to pull the boat back that much to balance it. The bimini is not what I ordered (it's too small; I don't think a 2 bow bimini fits a boat this big, I ordered a 3 bow bimini). The 2 jaw slides were broken and the snaps are too big and don't fit in the eyes. I've been working on these minor issues to have the boat ready soon.

I still have to install a 6" SS cleat at the bow, and some Doel fins to my OB. I also want a flag with my kids name on it:D
I want to do all work possible now that I have the boat in my house, because I'm going to leave the boat at a marina as a permanent home. It's a place called "Club Salvadore?o Corinto" at Lake Ilopango (beleive me, it's not comfortable working the boat there; the place is beautiful though;)).

So, I've set a date, and D Day is Sunday May 3rd:D
I'll take my family and start breaking the motor in. I'll take pics and give my rookie review.

Thanks for your comments.

So glad to hear that. I didn't want to rain on your parade and tell you I thought that little bimini looked silly :)

and some Doel fins to my OB.

Don't go adding these unless you determine there is a problem that they are needed to solve. Especially since you may have some basic work on the motor set-up to do (possibly raising it).

Have fun!

Re: My first real boat!

Please do not install a Doel fin. Do a search on this site for Smart Tabs. The fins introduce a whole new set of issues including handling issues, additional stress on the transom. The smart tabs are the way to go.

You should mount the motor as high as possible without venting. This decreases the drag created by the lower and increases speed and fuel economy. Most people start with the plate even with the bottom of the transom and then adjust as needed.

The rule in the outboard set up buisness, is that water exiting the bottom of the hull, when on plane should not be flowing over the top of the anti-ventilation plate, but below it, this reduces drag on the lower unit.
