Stupid question bought a couple of counterotating 200 johnson from craigslist old looper motors probably 1989 told was running takeoff (upgraded to four strokes) but had set stored upright and covered for two years! I had no option because of circumstance to do compression test, or any real tests (leap of faith kinda deal) motors are locked up both identicaly, crank will rotate about a degree back and forth I scoped out cylinder with boroscope no apparent problem smell like varnish(expected) no water in cyl, I soaked cyl with penetrant and im letting sit just seemed wierd both locked up identically anybody have similar problem when buy outboard that set up. any common problems with these units and how hard to rebuild powerheads. I have no outboard skills but Iam a diesel engine rebuilder so plenty of tools. thanks alot guys been alot of help so far with other parts of project.

Jeff, That is a strange story. Why not drop the gearcases to see if they are the locked up part? Grab a service manual, and it will describe dropping of the gearcase and rebuild of motors if necessary.

Re: stuck johnson 200

Just in case anyone is curious, dropped one lower no gain in motion on crank decided to pull one head. Pulled head cyl walls look good minor stuff you would expect after layup on walls no wear ridge at top of cyl. Took hard wood dowel and tapped top of all pistons, while working the crank back and forth finally got the engines to spin with the cyl full of pb blaster. Think they feel pretty good going to go ahead and replace all the head gskt, thermostats, water pumps, and rebuild carbs. Figure it must of been condensation sticking the rings to the walls. Little larger set of engines than I wanted but for the price you can't beat it. Thanks for the help!
