Will my '57 18hp FasTwin plane a 16' glass Herter's boat?

Hi folks....what a great resource you all have been to me over the past year....I've been through several motors as I've changed boats....now I'm considering trading my 12' Starcraft (nice old '68 with a wide beam) for a 16' Herter's fiberglass boat (I think it's the Quebec model, maybe from the 60's....) it's a nice boat with a wide beam, has two removeable plywood casting decks toward the front. The owner put a fuel cell in the front bench seat to assist with planing. The boat originally had three wood-topped fiberglass benches. The middle seat has a livewell built into it with a drain plug. There is a battery on the boat.

I've got a fabulous reconditioned (just back from the marina with all new ignition, carb job and lower unit reseal) '57 18hp Fastwin that screams....I have it on my 12' Starcraft and it's awesome with two big guys and all our gear...and it's lighter than any newer 9.9 would be. Have it on a mini-jacker plate to get the cav plate in the right place (it has that famous 18" shaft length.) It really, really flies.....

Now I'm wondering how it would do on the Herter's boat....can't find any specs on the weight of the Herter's....all i know is it's fiberglass over an aluminum skeleton, has a planing-type hull, and originally had a 35hp Evinrude that will prob need too much work for my liking....owner is willing to trade boat for boat....will my 18hp be enough for a boat like this? Don't want to make a mistake and get too much boat for the motor and have to give up this gem....I love this motor!

I'll try to post some photos of the Herter's boat.
Thanks.
Pete

OK, I have the 1973 Herter's Catalog in front of me. They show just one 16' open fiberglass boat for that year, the Yukon, which is 16' long with a 68" beam, and 58" wide at the transom. It's rated for 40 hp, and weighs 235 lb. I suspect that's very similar to yours, but you can check the measurements.

I think it would probably plane with just you in it, but probably not with a heavier loading. If yours is narrower, it might have just a 30 hp rating, and might perform better, but if the measurements match up...well...

I think a 25 hp would be the minimum I'd probably put on that boat, and a 35 would be ideal.

Edit to add: OK, I see your photos, and yours is the exact same design as the one in my 1973 catalog, so it's rated for 40 hp. Max load is 1067 lb.

Re: Will my '57 18hp FasTwin plane a 16' glass Herter's boat?

Thanks for the reply, CAT.....and as it turns out, you were dead right. I ran the Herter's with the 18hp for a few weeks, striper fishing on the CT River, and it was alright, got maybe 13 mph with two aboard, and 16 or so with one aboard, but that was really working the motor at full throttle.

I wound up trading the 18hp with a guy who rebuilt a wooden boat from the same era (late 50's) for a 33hp Evinrude SkiTwin from the late 60's. Runs awesome....I also completely redid the Herter's boat into a bass boat project. It's just about done, except for painting the boat...my wife hates the faded blue bathtub look.

I redecked the boat (except for the front hinged deck lid which I will still change out at some point) and mounted a foot-control trolling motor at the bow. Added hatches for storage and the livewell. Added aerator pump to the livewell and submersible lights in the livewell. Built a console for steering, added helm and steering linkage, re-ran all wiring from the rear of the boat to the console. Added new ignition and electric choke switches. Ran the fish finder from rear to console. Added two seats (came out of a friend's Javelin bass boat)...still need one more flip-down fishing seat/pedestal (but I'll probably look for two so they will match...probably in gray.)

The Herter's is very stable with its wide beam...even by myself, there's not too much tilt when I'm driving, and I'm 225 lbs....it's going to be sweet when it's finally done....oh, yeah...the original owner added an 18-gallon fuel tank under the forward bench seat....nice not to have to use the 6-gallon can.

Of course, the propeller is at the bottom of a local lake...I checked everything except the actual cotter pin...must have been rusted out inside the prop nut and when that broke....no prop....good thing for the trolling motor to get back to the launch.

Nice trades and nice pix, but I gotta see a better one of the 33 hp ski twin. I'll bet it makes your Herter's boat fly.

The Herters Quebec according to the 1959 catalogue weights 225 pounds. She is rated for 35 HP. Supposedly a Quebec went from Miami to South America. I have a 1959 model. Her first engine was an 18 HP Johnson. Pushed her 19 MPH with two people. Next I tried a 20 HP Johnson. Same speed. Recently I bought a 1983 35 HP Evinrude. I have yet to try it. I expect speed of about 30 MPH with the wife and me. The Quebec is a great rough water boat. Ours is used in Apalachicola Bay, Fl. the Bay can get very choppy in a hurry. The Quebec takes it like a duck. We are fond of ours.

Hey now! Apalachicola is near my neck of the woods here in Tallahassee. Small world, but about as a far from Quebec as you can get :) I used to have a '66 33 hp Johnson and it was a great motor pound for pound, and was very reliable. Here's a great link for keeping these old "Big Twins" up and running and you can get virtually any routine part you may need right here at iboats. Congrats on the project. Hope to see the paint job soon.
