2003 johnson 90hp outboard

I'm finding the motor to have a hard start. I just started it but it took like 5 minutes to start. Was wondering if you have any tips as far as where to have the throttle position or when to choke it. I think if I push in the key as I crank it, that is the choke. I usually leave the throttle position in the neutral position, then I throttle it a little, then drop if back down to neutral position while cranking.

The boat has full fuel, oil, I checked the plugs & they are new, I prime the motor with the gas pump prior to start too. Once it gets that initial start, the thing runs great & you can turn it on and off & it starts right up.

Thanks

Sounds like you are losing fuel pressure when it sits, check all of your fuel connections to make sure your not sucking air, the primer bulb should stay somewhat full if everything is connected good. May want to check the choking system too, if its not working properly then the fuel pump alone is having to fill the bowls to get enough fuel to start it.

That motor should have the "quickstart" feature. Set the throttle to neutral, prime the bulb, push in and hold the key while cranking. When it starts release key. The motor should run at 1100 RPM or so until it warms up and then drop back to 800 RPM. It might stall once during this period. if it acts differently, you likely have some adjustment issues.

Just to let everyone know, I held the key in for 8 seconds & it worked perfectly. Started right up.

Thanks to all.
