need help with rough idle Yamaha 115 4-stroke

1st trip out this year after winter storage. Boat started and ran fine at all throttle positions except at idle speed. Rough, coughing idle that would stall after a few seconds. Kept fuel topped off and stabilized over the 4 month storage period. Ran fine the last trip out in Dec 08. Only burned 12 gallons of the 60 gallon tank during this 1st trip and topped off again. Changed spin on exterior fuel filter and ran on the muffs when back in the driveway without any change in performance. Any recommendations?

2000 model F115TXRY. Had Yamaha 10micron spin on fuel filter/water separator installed.

cough indicates only one thing.
a lean condition in the cylinder.
can be caused by an intake air leak or a sticking/dirty injector or abnormally low fuel rail pressure.
isolate which cylinder by unclipping an injector one at a time the reclipping it and see how the engine reacts.

is it safe to use injector cleaner additive to the fuel tank, i.e. Lucas Injector cleaner?

Re: need help with rough idle Yamaha 115 4-stroke

Found this March 09 forum question on a search that seems eerily similar to my problem. I probably over stated the cough in my original post, it's really just a rough, oscillating idle that when it falls to 600 it stalls unless I give it some gas. Does the t-stat replacement really make sense for a rough, oscillating idle?

During my de-winterization and on my first run of this season, I noted the engine idle would cycle down to 7K then up to 9K and then go back to 8k. It occurred every 30-45 seconds at idle. Normal idle is 8k on digital Yamaha tach.

The idle fluctuation occurred on both the muffs and on the water when in neutral idle. No other problems at other RPM's.

Background:

Prior to starting the engine for the first time, I replaced the fuel/water separator cartridge and engine filter. I purged the fuel from the separator to the engine.

Fuel tank full of non-ethanol fuel treated with Stabil from October.

Engine run on muffs 20 minutes.
Engine run on the water for 3+ hrs without any other issue.

Last March, I had clogged VST, injectors that was resolved by dealer. See Issue with Fuel System thread

Boat ran ~ 60 hours last season without any signs of a problem.

Engine has 142 hrs.

Resolution
It appears the problem is fixed.

The thermostat was changed and the motor is now idling at 7 and there is no intermittent fluctuation. An in the water test will be done to confirm.

There was some salt globs that appear to be keeping the old thermostat from closing completely. I would hazard a guess this part was original (2003).

Thanks to Sdsaw, Rodbolt and Jay. I really appreciate your help.

started again on muffs to pay closer attention. Idle immediately after start seemed stable around 800 rpm, then about 30 sec later started to fall off down to 600 rpm and fluctuate.

If you have not changed the thermostat in two years, do it. Even if the old one looks "okay", if it does not close properly, it will throw the ECU off.

I would add this to your annual maintenance list for replacement every other year.

In regard to your question on injector cleaning additives, they may help but if an injector is clogged, the straight forward method is to remove them and send them to a cleaning shop who will clean them test them with special equipment. Costs about ~$25 per injector plus shipping.

SOUNDS LIKE THE , injectors AGAIN. IT COULD BE YOUR FUEL THAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM. I WOULD TRY A 6 GAL CAN WITH NEW FUEL. IF IT IS STILL THERE ITS YOUR INJECTORS. PULL A FUEL SAMPLE IN A CLEAR GLASS AND LET IT SIT.. I HAD A COBIA WITH TWIN F115 THE FUEL WAS BAD RIGHT FROM THE PUMP. HAD THE INJECTORS CLEAD 4 TIMES BEFORE THE FUEL WAS REMOVED ON FIXED THE PROBLEM..

sounds like dirty injectors / injector screens.
curious, what stabilizer did you use?

Re: need help with rough idle Yamaha 115 4-stroke

i also have a f115 2000 model and was having same problem at idle and no power thruout the throttle range..... went thru the ENTIRE fuel system and got down to just the injectors left .... sent them out and got them back yesterday now my engine runs great!!! They were dirty and erratic and the imbalance was ridiculous.... anyway I had 2 flooding at idle and wot and 1 lean at idle and flooding at wot

anyway I sent them here http://www.brucatosvs.com/fuel_injector.html

mailed them last monday and they sent them back on thurs and I got them yesterday so it took a week door to door and now my engine runs like a scalded cat again

cost me 110 bucks :D

Re: need help with rough idle Yamaha 115 4-stroke

If your engine is NOT coughing/sneezing and stalling because it idles too low, your problem could be related to bad tstat, ISC valve or incorrect TPS voltage.

Here was Rodbolts advice on that thread...

here's what creates the 700 RPM or so idle.
mostly its by the temp sensor,TPS and ISC.
its possible the t-stat is stuck its possible the ISC is sticking or dirty and its possible the TPS voltage is incorrect.
the ECU will adjust air,via the ISC and ign timing based on signals from the ECT and TPS to try to maintain the ECU mapped idle speed for the throttle angle and engine temp inputs.
now ya just gotta find out whats not quite right.
remember the ECU is rather stupid.

Good luck and post your results.
