Help! Are these tires safe?

I will be making an 80 mile trip on the interstate at 70mph tomorrow to go get a new rolling tool cabinet. The tires on my truck probably only have 8000 miles on them, but they are 9 years old and are doing this around the edges. The sidewalls are fine, the cracking is only on the tread itself, and only on the edges. I took a photo so you can see them. Do you think these tires are ok for a round trip 160 miles at 70mph?

I never go anywhere on the interstate, it's an around-town truck, so I never had to think about it until now.

What say you, Iboats?

How heavy of a load? If you are near max weight with that box NO WAY..... got a home depot near you to rent a truck from? :D

I would make the trip on the tires but they would certainly on my list to replace and NOT with what brand they are now..... unless you go to a dealer and ask about the cracking. Never know they might be known to fail and most tire warranties are based on miles not time. You might have a chunk of credit there to use.

No, the truck would empty except for the box, weight 140lbs. This is on a little Nissan truck, short bed, regular cab. A tiny little truck with no accessories added except a plastic bed box which might weigh 15lbs.

Those are in prime condition for tread separation...
The weather will play into this too...if its a hot day then twice the chance they come apart.
I would drive on them but be easy...

The tires are comming apart on their own without the help of a 70mph - 160mile trip. Is your insurance paid up?

For 80 miles, I would.

I have had to drive on worse than that before.
Just make sure the spare is aired up.

Three years ago I had a michelin tire break a belt and overheat on I95 . AT 70 MPH IT BLEW . I wouldnt trust those tires at higher speeds where you get higher temps, Driving slow 45 mph for short trips would be ok but just too risky on an interstate, I would go to pep boys and get some econo tires .

Looks like the trip will be delayed. I called minutes before departure and they said that they had 6 tops, 6 bottoms, but no middle pieces left. Looks like I have to wait until Wednesday at the earliest as that is when their truck comes in. Hopefully the local store will get one in.

I wouldn't back out of the driveway on 9 year old tires.

I see cracking between the tread and further in. I would keep the truck for around town only.....

That just very well may be the good Lord's way of saving your (or someone else's) arse. Giving you time to get some new tires or a different pick-up to use to go get that new tool box.
