frustrating, motor dying

okay, I have a 1969 evinrude 85hp outboard. I have taken it out several times with no issues then the last time I had it out I took it out a couple miles and then shut the motor down to troll for a bit. I decided to move so fired up the main motor again and got up onto plane and went about a quarter mile when the motor just died. The only way I could get it to fire was to choke it and out of about 9 times 8 of them I'd give it throttle and as soon as I did it would die again. The other time I gave it throttle and it had no power at all, then died. So I got to come back in on my kicker. The motor fired right up to flush it and had no problems while flushing. I rebuilt the carbs assuming this was the problem. Put them back on and tried it again today. Fired right up but getting up on plane it acted like it was missing, had a lot of vibration but then cleared out and popped up on plane. I ran it at between 4000 and 5000 rpm for quite a while but as soon as I tried to go back to idle it died. Could not start it. The only time it would try to start was when choked but could not keep it running. Has a month old fuel pump on it. I replaced all fuel line in motor when carbs were rebuilt. I don't know where to go from here. It had spark in the water today when it would not run so I'm pretty sure it's fuel but where do I start?

the coil is new and the points are also new and adjusted a couple months ago. the motor seemed to have spark though.

I did adjust the one screw on the lower end of the throttle cam on the motor. I thought it adjusted idle speed but now it is looking like the idle timing? the screw goes through the throttle cam and there looks to be a little spring in it as well. Could this be an issue?

you have 2 slow speed needle valve on each carb, one on each side. you have 2 carb bodies, that have 2 carbs, built together. these needle valves have to be adjusted separately, one at a time.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Re: frustrating, motor dying

update... I brought the boat home today and checked compression 130 on both #1 AND #3. 120 on both #2 and #4. Checked for spark again, bright blue spark. adjusted needle valves in to seat and then as per the local marine shop's recommendation adjusted them out 2 turns. Motor pops like it's trying to start but nothing. Carbs smell like fuel and I can see a small amount in the bottom of the barrels. ????? won't start though?????
