A lower unit from a 1970-1985 4 or 6 cylinder inline motor will fit. Some had different gear ratios. If your old one is 2::1. the inline six LUs are exact.

I need one. Any suggestions?

They come up on ebay from time to time. I have one from a merc 140 that will fit. To be honest though shipping would not be cheap. You should be able to find a dead 1150 around locally with a useable lower end. They usually end up cooking the power head and they are expensive to fix.

Suh-weet!! Thanks for the replies! But, just to make sure before I start, I have a 1973 Merc 850 and a 1983 Mariner 115 that have blown powerheads. Either of these will work on a 1976 Merc 850? I hate to sound redundant, but, I just want to be sure before I start tearing down everything. Thanks in advance. JT

Both will fit. The '73 Merc has a 2.3::1 gear ratio. The '83 has a 2::1 gear ratio. I do not know what your motor has, but it is one of the two. If there is enough left of your LU to find out, match it up. If not throw on the best LU you have and adjust the prop pitch up or down 2" and it should be fine.
