I have an 18 horse evinrude with a stripped plug hole. Is it still posible to repair this problem with a heli-coil insert? If so does anyonr know where to purchase this item? If not or for a better repair would a new head be possible to find for a reasonable price and where would I find this item? Thanks, Allen

Re: 18 horse

You can use a heli-coil to fix it. You can also get a used head.
laingsoutboards.com, tcoutboards.com
or place a free ad on aomci.org

What year is your 18hp?

You need the tools to install a Heli-Coil. If you only need one or two, it is cheaper to have somebody do it for you.

I am not sure what year this outboard is. I think it in the 70's. I will be getting it back from the person that I sold it to several years ago. They messed the plug hole up and when I get it back I will try to find out what year it is. Can I find out using the serial number?
Thanks,
Allen

While I've gone the helicoil route and it works, your motor is quite popular and with a little work, you can buy a used cylinder head and the gasket from iboats.

Re: 18 horse

Hey everyone. The 18 hp outboard that I just got is a johnson and not an evinrude as I had thought The model # isFD-14 and the serial # is200920. Any idea of the year of this motor? Turns out that the engine is stuck. I will try to unstick this motor soon. Any ideas on how to unstick this motor?
Thanks, Allen

Hi Allen - a FD-14 is a 1960. Turn the cylinders vertical with the plugs facing up. Remove the plugs & spray in some PB Blaster & let sit for a few hours. Try working the flywheel back & forth by hand or wrench until it loosens. Hopefully this helps.

PB Blaster is a penetrating oil, kind of like WD-40 but better. You should find it any hardware, auto parts store, probably even at Walmart. Godd luck!

Thanks for the info BDbill. I already have WD-40 soaking in the cylinders and I will be looking for the PB Blaster.I also thought about Marvel Mystery Oil. People used to say that worked on stuck engines.

Re: 18 horse

I hace got the 18 hp unstuck. I used WD-40 and Lubriplate chain and cable penetrating fluid in the cylinders and within 1 day the engine turned over freely. Now I have to deal with the stripped plug hole. I put in a new plug and it tightened ok, but I haven't started it yet.
Can any one tell me the correct oil/gas mixture for this 1960 18hp johnson? Is it 50/1 or16/1 ? Thanks
